How I’m Learning To Better Prioritize My Time!

Happy Saturday Fabbies! After a somewhat long week, I wanted write a post about my crazy busy life lately, and mainly my journey to entrepreneurship. As many of you know, I’m in the process of opening up an online boutique. I’ve been working diligently to get everything just right, from the packaging, to the design of certain products, to choosing (the RIGHT) fabulous things that I know you guys will love, to everything else in between. I’ve sampled things, decided I didn’t like the way certain things turned out, went back to the drawing board, and so on.

I have learned that I have to be patient with myself if I want the perfection that I strive for. But mannnnn does that get hard sometimes! You guys already know how excited I am to share my store with you! But then I may get labels back that have the wrong coloring, or I changed my mind mid-design while designing something, so then I have to start over, which delays production time, etc, etc. So in the midst of learning, creating, and putting together a store, there’s this other thing I have going on: Oh! I’m a wife and a mom. Hahaha! Which doesn’t change, with or without the store. So something else that I have been learning on my journey to entrepreneurship, is how to prioritize and manage my time.

Notice I said “I have been learning”, meaning, I’m still in the process of learning every single day. And I have to be honest, sometimes, it’s extremely hard to prioritize. Somedays, I want to be glued to my laptop working on my business all day long. Seriously, I would not mind working on FRB (my store), this blog, or researching business tactics, or reading a book on anything entrepreneurial! But in reality, that just cannot happen! I still have kids to raise, dinner to cook, laundry to fold, errands to run, a man to…be a wife to. ;0  Stuff just has to get done around here. So with all of the things that come with me wanting to be an entrepreneur, I understand that everyday will NOT be all rainbows and sunshine. Sometimes I get frustrated because a design sample didn’t turn out the way I wanted, or I’m in the middle of a phone call with a supplier, and one of the kids just HAS TO HAVE my attention at that very moment. I literally have to take deep breaths sometimes just to gather myself.

So, over the last several months, I’ve learned how to divide my time between work/family/household, and one of the biggest things that I have cut down on A LOT is watching television. I used to DVR every TV show that came on under the sun. These days, I rarely even have time to watch TV anymore. But, because I still occasionally like to enjoy my guilty pleasures of reality TV, I set aside a special day for TV watching, and that is Laundry Night. Depending on my mood, Laundry Day typically falls on Saturday or Sunday. So these are the days I designate to do laundry, and since I have to sit still while folding clothes, I figure I might as well watch a little TV while I do. And sometimes, even then, I might choose to listen to a podcast instead.

Anyway, I said all of that to say that, that sometimes, I feel like I’ve got my time management down pat, and other days I feel like I’ve just flat out struggled. Something (household chores, my business, my blog, etc..) or someone (kids, Chris, family, friends) may not have gotten the proper attention that they’ve deserved, or maybe I felt I could have spent an extra few minutes playing hide and seek with the kids. I definitely make a conscious effort to try and balance it everyday. Being a Stay at home mom, the kids and Chris are always priority number one though. And let me tell you, the days that I feel like I’ve totally mastered my time management and productivity, well, I celebrate it of course!

Yesterday was one of those days where I felt like I was able to get so many things done. And the crazy part is, it was a day that I didn’t have to wake up with the kids. (Chris and I take turns getting up when the kids get up in the mornings. That way, the person who doesn’t go downstairs with them, can either sleep in for a bit, read, meditate, or do whatever for themselves that morning.)  Here’s a look at how my day went:

  • 6:35 am: Wake Up
  • 6:40-7:40 am: Finish reading “You Are A Brand”
  • 7:45-8:05 am: Meditation and Prayer
  • 8:30 am: Cook breakfast for Zé and Vito. (Oatmeal for Zé, Scrambled tofu sandwich for Vito.)
  • 9:00 am: Helped Chris fulfill orders for customers for his clothing line.
  • 10:00 am: Showered and got dress for the day.
  • 10:30 am: Get kids dressed and help them with brushing their teeth.
  • 10:45 am: Brush Zé’s hair
  • 10:50 am: Pack lunch for the park: (Veggie samosas, parmesan eggplant sandwiches, and tater tots. All these things came frozen, so I just popped them all in the oven at the same time. I just had to prepare the bread for the parmesan eggplant sandwich. Bake time was about 18 minutes.
  • 11:30 am: Drive to post office to drop off customers’ packages for DCTG Sportswear. (Zé and Vito were with me.)
  • 11:50 am: Arrive to park with the kids.
  • 12:30 am: Lunch at the park
  • 1:30 pm: Arrive back home.
  • 2:00pm: Zé and Vito nap
  • 2:30 pm: Start on new book: “The Personal Touch” by Terrie Williams
  • 3:30pm: Kids wake up from their nap. I start on dinner (I like to get dinner out of the way early! I made spicy vegan sausage pasta with onions and garlic.
  • 4:15 pm: Pool time with the family! (It was seriously 100 degrees that day. I mean, it’s the end of October and I’m still getting tans. I’m not complaining though! ;p)
  • 6:00 pm: Bath time for kids/ shower time for me
  • 7:00 pm: Snacktime for kids (peanut butter and jelly sandwiches)
  • 7:15 pm: Play with leggos with kids before bed.
  • 7:50pm: Brush their teeth; nighttime routine with kids.
  • 8:00pm: Lights out for kids.
  • 8:15 pm: Hang out/talk to Chris on the couch
  • 9:30 pm: Make tweaks to FRB’s store website.
  • 10:10 pm: Research materials and supplies for new product idea.
  • 10:400 pm: Breakdown numbers for inventory.
  • 11:00 pm: Head to bedroom for the night.
  • 11: 45 pm: Bedtime

Below are a few pictures from my day:

The face I make after Vito informs me that he has to poop, and there is no bathroom anywhere in sight. (Luckily I bring wipes everywhere with me. 😉

Minus moments of interactions with Chris and the kids throughout the day, this is what the other day looked like for me in its entirety. If you notice, I had zero time to watch television. It’s just always stuff to do. And this day looked totally different than the next day. Some days, I may not have errands to run, but I may have tons of things to do around the house. Some days I have to fit a workout in my schedule. Ya’ll know I need my outdoor runs a few times a week! And in the midst of this, I have to carve out time to work on my business. Guess what? I’m okay with all of this! I’ve got goals I want to reach. So I have to figure out ways to get them done!

Have a fabulous weekend Fabbies! Hope you’re enjoying some awesome Halloween festivities! Cheers!

xoxo
